{1}{1}15.000 {1}{38}HRT 1, "Globalno sijelo", 26. 04. 2005., 20:30 {38}{80}What is it that flies on holydays and is|lowered to half mast on sad occasions? {80}{112}That is the topic of the story|by our Mario Beganovic. {123}{145}"Ensign First Grade" {151}{196}The modern world can not|be imagined without flags. {196}{317}They are the identity card of each state,|the national pride of every nation. {318}{392}In Pazinska Street in Zagreb lives|a man who knows on flags almost all. {392}{454}Zeljko Heimer is an IT specialist|in the Ministry of Defence. {455}{507}He returns from the job around 5|and then he occupies his "war room". {508}{545}The time is short and|the flags are numerous. {545}{640}Zeljko is one of a few Croatian|vexillologist, the scholars of flags. {647}{711}What I find interesting here is,|let call it so, the stories ... {733}{811}... that the colourful pictures|recount in its background. {811}{887}The vexillology as an auxiliary historical|science is developed only in 20th century, {887}{967}... somewhat in the same time as the process|of formation of the national states in Europe. {967}{1040}In that time the flag becomes|an identification of a nation, {1040}{1074}penetrating all the layers|of the society. {1074}{1181}The "flagologist" Zeljko studies the Croatian|historical flags for the last ten years or so. {1181}{1290}Here, we may say that the Croatian|flag begins with Ban Josip Jelacic. {1290}{1459}In 1848 Jelacic introduced the|red-white-blue tricolour as his Ban's flag. {1459}{1597}At the time other flags of|red-white-blue emerge in the people. {1597}{1686}The speciality of the house of Heimer|is the flags of the Croatian counties and cities. {1686}{1759}It is little known that each of the|20 county flags must be of two colours, {1759}{1800}while each city flag|must be monocoloured. {1800}{1892}Even in the worldwide vexillologic proportions|our county flags are exceptional and unique, {1892}{1971}but neither that is, as it appears,|a reason enough for us to value them. {1971}{2119}Regarding some other European countries,|the cult of the flag hoisting is not that developed. {2119}{2195}By us is usual, and even prescribed|by law for the state institutions, {2195}{2256}that the flag is to be hoisted|on their buildings permanently. {2256}{2345}In Europe it is usual that the flag|is raised, lowered in the evening ... {2345}{2371}... and not retained flying|during the night. {2371}{2421}As every science,|the vexillology has its rules. {2421}{2492}The first and the most basic|rule requires a flag to be simple... {2492}{2563}i.e. designed so that even |a child could draw it by heart. {2563}{2657}In this sense our current|state flag is quite complex. {2657}{2763}However, it is in spite quite recognizable;|it is still not lost in a multitude of flags. {2763}{2839}The "squares" in the coat of arms|are always relatively well seen, {2839}{2906}so that considering the second principle|of vexillology that the flag should be ... {2906}{2960}... well identifiable, it does|accomplishes its task. {2960}{2975}Zeljko follows the modern|trends in the flag design. {2975}{3053}The tricolours are slowly|moving out of the fashion, {3053}{3107}while simple and effective designs|become more and more popular. {3107}{3184}One of the first in this sense is|the flag of Canada with its maple leaf {3184}{3290}and we are surely acquainted|with the flag of B&H ... {3290}{3328}... that does not have much connection|with any kind of tradition. {3328}{3425}Among the modern flags according to|the design I would point out ... {3425}{3560}... the flag of Macedonia, very|recognizable and still very simple. {3560}{3624}Flags also tell some unbelievable stories. {3624}{3723}In 1998 Greece entered the Guinness|book with almost 200 kg heavy flag. {3723}{3800}Already next year the Italians excelled it.|In the centre of Rome they unfolded ... {3800}{3881}a kilometre and a half long|and 220 kg heavy tricolour. {3881}{3927}The infamous record comes|from the East. {3927}{4056}Afghanistan is a flag that was changed|probably the most times in the 20th century. {4056}{4071}Some vexillologists counted some 50|times that the flag was changed ... {4071}{4238}.. in 20th century by different|regimes that alternated there. {4238}{4306}Zeljko's persistence and aspiration|also broke the old Croatian prejudice ... {4306}{4383}that the study of coats of arms is done|by the man, while the flags are for women. {4383}{4473}Women were those who manufactured flags,|embroidering and stitching them. {4473}{4560}Women were also those who were sponsors|at the flag consecration ceremonies, {4560}{4667}so that it was retained in some|kind of tradition that even today ... {4667}{4771}... in the auxiliary historical sciences|the flags are dealt with mostly by women. {4771}{4816}However, that is, of course,|very conditionally stated. {4816}{4886}And while we are at the topic of women,|mother Stanka admits that ... {4886}{4942}she is sometimes sorry that her son|does not go out more often. {4942}{4987}Do you object it to him sometimes? {4987}{5046}Of course, I do. And sometimes|I impel him, but he is already ... {5052}{5095}grown up for him to|decide, and not me... {5095}{5161}At the mother's words|Zeljko just shrugs. {5161}{5212}By the sounds of the night he still|prefers the sounds of the ... {5213}{5290}flapping flags around the world.
