The map by Angelino Dulcert of 1339 (preserved in the National Library in Paris) showes the flags on the on the main ports in Mediteranean Sea. The flag shown for the city of Narent - today Drijeva near Metković (although Drijeva is today over the border in Bosnia and Herzegovina) is shown as being blue and white quartered. The flag is probably based on description and depiction from the book "Libro del conoscimiento de todos los Reynos" by a Franciscan friar born in Spain in 1305, which is considered among the oldest books systematically showing flags of the world.

The map by Angelino Dulcert of 1339 (preserved in the National Library in Paris) showes the flags on the on the main ports in Mediteranean Sea. The map pictures a flag in characteristic shape - rectangular with a concave tail and fringe, vertically divided itno a red and a yellow field, the first containing a yellow star. The same flag, sometimes shown with a yellow disk instead of the star, which is probably an error in copying of the drawing from one to an other source, appears on several other maps of the period and it is probably based on description and depiction from the book "Libro del conoscimiento de todos los Reynos" by a Franciscan friar born in Spain in 1305, which is considered among the oldest books systematically showing flags of the world. Tomović depicts the flag in standard rectangular shape. The flag is showing the armorial emblems of the counts of Frankapan who ruled Senj between 1271 and 1469. Isaić (2001) mentions the prescription from the 14th century statutes of Senj determining that a ship that enters the port without showing its flag shall be financially fined.
